Politicians Get Elected by Turning Your Dreams Into Nightmares

In the State of the Union, President Obama said:

I want to spread that idea all across America, so that two years of college becomes as free and universal in America as high school is today.

Sounds good, since diplomas from those free (well, paid for by taxpayers) and universal (no matter how rotten they are) are worth so much.

Remember, politicians also wanted to spread the dream of home ownership. Also, recall, they turned it into a nightmare for many.

  1. If it’s an analogous situation as Mr. Obama suggests, we should expect that a PhD will become the new BA/BS. Honest college professors agree that for most students the first year or two of college is spent learning what they should have learned in high school, i.e. as Seth notes, high school graduates are largely not prepared for college work. When college becomes free and universal, we will have more students attending who are incapable of doing college work. Who will teach this additional mass of students? Certainly not the better college professors. No, the task of “teaching” (?babysitting) this cadre will fall to grad students and inexperienced teaching associates. Because it’s free, there is less incentive to actually learn something and less incentive to pursue some path other than college.

But then, Obama’s promises have nothing to do with actually making life better for Americans and everything to do with making American voters believe that life will be better for them if they vote for his programs.
