One of my least favorite business leader analogies is about getting the right people on the bus and getting the bus moving in the right direction.
In this analogy, the business leader is the bus driver and his job is to get the right people on the bus, let them know where the bus is heading and then start driving.
I dislike this analogy.
First, bus drivers are not responsible for getting the right people on the bus.
Bus riders choose the bus they want to get on and they usually do so with the prior knowledge of where that bus is heading. They don’t wait to be selected by the bus driver, they don’t wait to be told by the bus driver where to sit and they don’t wait to let the bus driver tell them where they’re going.
Second, riders on a bus don’t do much except sit there. Folks in organizations should do more than that.
