Good Reason to be libertarian

Thomas Sowell hits on a very good reason to be libertarian in his column, “Enough Money”.

Once you buy the argument that some segment of the citizenry should lose their rights, just because they are envied or resented, you are putting your own rights in jeopardy– quite aside from undermining any moral basis for respecting anybody’s rights. You are opening the floodgates to arbitrary power. And once you open the floodgates, you can’t tell the water where to go.

  1. I was in New Orleans this last weekend. My friend, who is very Liberal, her boyfriend, my wife and I were in the car talking and somehow Sowell came up. I think I was recommending Intellectuals and Society to her boyfriend. My friend said, she won’t read Sowell because “I think he is biased.” Her boyfriend and I took her to task after that, because not 3 minutes earlier she said that she always listens to both sides…needless to say we stopped talking politics soon after…or that would have been a long car ride.

    • “I think he is biased.” Such a nice fallacy that has no bearing on whether the points he makes have merit or not. That reminds me a Letter to the Editor I saw this week. I need to see if I can find it and post it.
